DESCRIPTION:John Wadsley has a background as a professional heritage consultant and historian. He has a strong interest in Australian military history and co-authored the bicentennial history of Anglesea Barracks in Hobart published in 2011. The presentation will explore the history of Triffitts Point\, later known as Cadbury peninsula. From its early colonial history as farm land\, through its time as an army camp and then industrialisation with the coming of Cadbury to Tasmania to the present with a proposal to for a housing development.

DESCRIPTION:Doll’s houses – what do they have to do with history?\nMiniature homes\, furnished with domestic articles and resident inhabitants\, both people and\nanimals\, have been made for thousands of years. The earliest known examples were found in\nthe Egyptian tombs of the Old Kingdom\, created nearly five thousand years ago (ref. Wikipedia).\nHomes belonging to wealthy folk were recreated which allowed for interior design and training of\nyoung girls in how to run a home. The earliest known commissioned home was 1557-1558.\nLindy will share some of her pieces that have evolved from a ‘flat-pack’ and show items made\nfrom scratch that are a replica of an earlier original. eg 1/12 th scale commode from Runneymede.

SUMMARY:Monthly meeting at Howrah Community Centre
DESCRIPTION:Mike Severs talking on Charles Babbage who was a 19th-century mathematician\, engineer and inventor. Among the many things he invented were cow catchers for steam locomotives and coloured spotlights for theatrical productions. \nBut he’s most famous for his invention of calculating machines\, mechanical precursors to computers. Babbage created a working model of his first calculating engine in June 1822\, so 2022 is the 200th anniversary of this event. \nBabbage is also famous for his friendship with Lord Byron’s daughter Ada Lovelace. She wrote a program for one of his calculating engines\, and as a result she is often credited with being the world’s first computer programmer. This talk has a rich cast of people and interesting stories.
