Doll’s houses – what do they have to do with history?
Miniature homes, furnished with domestic articles and resident inhabitants, both people and
animals, have been made for thousands of years. The earliest known examples were found in
the Egyptian tombs of the Old Kingdom, created nearly five thousand years ago (ref. Wikipedia).
Homes belonging to wealthy folk were recreated which allowed for interior design and training of
young girls in how to run a home. The earliest known commissioned home was 1557-1558.
Lindy will share some of her pieces that have evolved from a ‘flat-pack’ and show items made
from scratch that are a replica of an earlier original. eg 1/12 th scale commode from Runneymede.
